Dane Rhys is an Australian visual journalist based in the United States. His work focuses on the people and landscapes that define modern industry, documenting how communities adapt to change in an era of shifting energy and environmental realities.
After a career in the gold mining industry, Dane turned his attention to visual storytelling—photographing industrial workers and the environments that sustain them. His long-term projects explore themes of transition: the evolution of the energy sector, the aging workforce, and the complex relationships between land, labor, and progress.
Dane is a graduate of the International Center of Photography’s Visual Journalism program, a participant in the Eddie Adams Workshop, and a contributor to the NEA-funded Kentucky Documentary Photographic Project. His editorial work has appeared in The Washington Post, Reuters Investigates, ProPublica, Bloomberg Green Magazine, Business Week, Markets Magazine, Business Insider, The Wall Street Journal, Oxford American, and other publications.
His photographs have been exhibited at the International Center of Photography in New York, Der Greif in Munich, the National Museum of Industrial History in Pennsylvania, and the Frazier History Museum in Kentucky. His work has also been recognized by American Photography Awards 40 & 41.
Alongside his editorial and documentary practice, Dane collaborates with a wide range of commercial partners, crafting visual narratives that blend journalistic depth with contemporary storytelling. Across all his work, he remains committed to authenticity, human connection, and the quiet power of visual truth.
